Do I need an ABN and GST registration?

These are two different things that people often confuse. An ABN (Australian Business Number) identifies your business and is free to get from the Australian Business Register. GST registration is a separate step that makes you charge 10% GST and lodge a BAS — and it is only required in certain situations.

When you must register for GST

According to the ATO, you must register for GST if any of these apply:

  • Your business or enterprise has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more a year (or you expect it to).
  • Your non-profit organisation has a turnover of $150,000 or more a year.
  • You provide taxi, limousine or ride-sourcing travel — regardless of your turnover.
  • You want to claim fuel tax credits for your business.

If none of these apply, GST registration is optional. You can still register voluntarily, but you'll then need to charge GST and lodge activity statements.

Getting an ABN

An ABN is free and is needed to register for GST, to avoid having tax withheld at the top rate, and to deal with other businesses. You apply through the Australian Business Register. Having an ABN does not automatically register you for GST — that is a separate choice or obligation.

Frequently asked questions

When do I have to register for GST?

You must register if your GST turnover is $75,000 or more a year ($150,000 for non-profits), if you provide taxi/rideshare travel, or if you want to claim fuel tax credits. Otherwise it's optional.

Is an ABN the same as GST registration?

No. An ABN identifies your business and is free; GST registration is a separate step that makes you charge 10% GST and lodge a BAS. You need an ABN to register for GST.

Should I register for GST voluntarily?

Some businesses do, to claim GST credits on purchases or to appear established. The trade-off is you must charge GST and lodge activity statements, which adds admin. Below the threshold it's your choice.
